Episodes 3-9
So... they CASUALLY introduced time travel. Also, I'm getting excited about potentially seeing more into Spock's character!! You can definitely tell its the 60's behaivor towards female characters is not ideal! Especially in that one episode where Kirk splits into 2... not a fan. HOWEVER, I can definitely respect the fact that it was technically revolutionary for its time, many of the female characters actually have stuff to contribute to the plot. (There are definitely some sexist ideas though, like that episode with the wives for the miners?) I have some mixed feelings but the show overall definitely feels like a time capsule of sorts. Honestly the historical aspect is one of the main draws for me, many of the crewmembers of color (Sulu and Uhura) were some of the first people of color shown in pop culture in both a positive and (mostly) non-stereotypical light. Is it the best representation ever? Absolutely not. But it IS important and good to look back upon to see how far we've come in those aspects. Also I think it's just plain fun, a little camp, but fun. They didn't have genre expectations while they were making this show so there are some episodes that low-key don't make sense! I honestly prefer insane plot to the same old same old you get with a lot of modern space shows. It feels like we don't really have fun with sci-fi anymore, it's always all about the sci and none about the fi! Don't get me wrong, I'm a science nerd myself, but I feel like we need more places to just have fun with "scientific" ideas and get creative. I can definitely see how this show was essentially the mother of fandom. I will say though, I would NOT work on that ship if it were me, people are dropping like FLIES.
Episodes 1-3
This section of the website will be dedicated to being a shrine for Star Trek, and documenting my experience watching it for the first time! As of today, I am beginning Season 1 of TOS, as I'm writing this, I'm on episode 3. I was pretty shocked when I started the series and got a different genre than I was expecting. I'm very used to space westerns such as Firefly or, in some cases, Star Wars, but instead I got something that is a lot more similar to modern day Doctor Who. It's almost as if the original creators were going more for Space Horror, which is super awesome! I've chosen to view the series in the order of release and NOT chronological order. I feel like you get a better experience that way since it is the way people originally experienced it and because you get to see the development of culture and how that is reflected in the changes between the shows. I'm so excited to start watching this and I hope that I can meet some people to discuss the show with. :)
